Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Luanda, Angola, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).

Shettima arrived in the Angolan capital on Saturday and was received by senior officials of the Angolan government and members of the Nigerian delegation attending the high-level continental meeting.

Among the Nigerian officials at the arrival ceremony were the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd.); Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; and Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh.

Others included the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN; Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa; Acting Chargé d’Affaires of the Nigerian Mission in Angola, Amb. Maxy Ogbede, and other senior government officials.

The extraordinary summit, themed **“Strengthening Mechanisms for Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa,”** is focused on strengthening the continent’s capacity to prevent, manage and resolve conflicts.

African leaders are expected to review existing peace and security mechanisms while considering practical responses to emerging threats across the continent.

Key issues on the agenda include early warning and early action, preventive diplomacy, and improved coordination between the African Union, member states and Regional Economic Communities.

The summit will also examine ways to strengthen the role of the AU Peace and Security Council and improve the effectiveness of the African Peace and Security Architecture and African Governance Architecture.

Another major area of discussion will be sustainable African financing for peace and security, alongside stronger continental responses to terrorism and violent extremism.

The meeting comes amid continuing security challenges across several parts of Africa, making conflict prevention and coordinated regional action a major priority for the continental body.

Ahead of the leaders’ session, foreign ministers and senior officials from AU member states met in Luanda for the 26th Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Council on Saturday.

The meeting was convened to prepare the groundwork for the deliberations of African Heads of State and Government.

Following his arrival, Shettima received a briefing from Foreign Affairs Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu and officials of the Nigerian Mission in Angola on the key issues expected to dominate the summit.

Nigeria’s participation is expected to reinforce its longstanding role in continental peace and security efforts and contribute to discussions on strengthening Africa-led solutions to the continent’s conflicts.
