Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has ordered the immediate dissolution of all ad hoc committees of the House following the expiration of the deadlines given to them to complete their assignments.

The directive, which took effect on Friday, August 28, 2026, was communicated in a circular signed by the Clerk of the House, Sidi Ibrahim, on Saturday.

According to the circular, the dissolution was necessary because the committees had exceeded the periods approved for them to carry out their mandates and submit their reports.

The House leadership said the affected committees had previously been directed to conclude their assignments and submit their reports in accordance with the Standing Orders and established practices of the House.

The development effectively brings an end to the activities of the various ad hoc panels constituted by the House for specific legislative investigations, assignments and other responsibilities.

The Clerk disclosed that only two of the committees had applied for and secured extensions under Order Eighteen, Rule 5 of the Standing Orders.

However, the additional two-week period granted to the two committees had also elapsed by the time the Speaker issued the latest directive.

With the extensions exhausted, the House leadership concluded that there was no basis for allowing the committees to continue operating.

The circular consequently directed that all ad hoc committees cease to exist with effect from August 28.

The dissolution is expected to affect committees whose assignments remained incomplete at the expiration of their respective mandates, effectively requiring the House leadership to determine whether any outstanding matters should be handled through fresh arrangements.

The Speaker’s directive is part of the House leadership’s effort to enforce procedural timelines governing committees and ensure that legislative assignments are concluded within approved periods.

Under the House’s Standing Orders, ad hoc committees are created for specific purposes and are expected to operate within the terms and timelines attached to their mandates.

The latest action also underscores the authority of the House leadership to terminate committees whose mandates have expired, particularly where approved extensions have run their course.

The Clerk’s circular did not indicate whether new committees would subsequently be constituted to take over unfinished assignments.

It also did not specify the individual committees affected by name, but stated that the dissolution applied to all ad hoc committees whose mandates had expired.

The House is expected to address any outstanding legislative business arising from the dissolved committees through further directives or other appropriate parliamentary mechanisms.
