The Federal Government plans to reach over 10 million Nigerian homes by 2060 through its National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme.

The initiative, implemented via the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas) and the Decade of Gas Initiative, launched its state-by-state rollout in Akwa Ibom State following an earlier phase in Bayelsa State.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, outlined the adoption targets for the nationwide effort. He noted that the intervention reflects President Bola Tinubu’s vision to deliver benefits to households, empower women, create jobs, and strengthen local economies through gas resources.

“The programme would target one million households annually, five million homes by 2030 and more than 10 million homes by 2060,” Ekpo said.

Coordinating Director of the Decade of Gas Initiative, Ed Ubong, announced that 27,000 filled LPG cylinders will be distributed to women across Akwa Ibom State as part of plans covering all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The NGLPP Programme Lead, Ramatu Abdullahi, explained that the distribution utilizes a Depot, Hub, and Node cylinder exchange model with refill points situated within one to two kilometers of communities. Under the model, beneficiaries receive up to six free refills managed via a digital tracking platform.

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno commended the rollout, stating that the project will improve lives and generate economic opportunities across cylinder manufacturing, storage, logistics, and processing.

Alongside the LPG distribution, the minister launched the Rural Women Empowerment Initiative for Entrepreneurship Development, providing N100,000 each to 3,000 women to support rural businesses and household incomes.
