The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the names and personal details of candidates contesting governorship elections across several states in the 2027 general elections, offering a clearer picture of the political battles expected to shape the next electoral cycle.

The particulars were released on Saturday through Form EC9 and displayed at INEC offices nationwide, with the documents containing information such as candidates’ ages, educational qualifications and other details submitted during the nomination process.

The publication brings the various governorship contests closer to the campaign season, with political parties expected to intensify mobilisation across the states ahead of the February 6, 2027 election.

Under the electoral timetable released by INEC, campaigns for governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled to begin in September 2026 and end on February 4, 2027.

The published lists show that major political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Allied Peoples Movement (APM), have fielded candidates in several states.

Lagos is among the states with a crowded field, with 17 candidates listed for the governorship election. The APC is represented by incumbent Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, while Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour is listed as the ADC candidate.

In Oyo State, 16 candidates are listed, including APC’s Sharafadeen Alli, APM’s Bimbo Adekambi and Yinusa Ayandare of the African Democratic Party.

Kaduna will also have a competitive race, with Governor Uba Sani seeking another term on the APC platform against 17 other candidates.

Sokoto has 19 candidates, including APC’s Ahmed Aliyu, PDP’s Abdullah Sokoto Abubakar, ADC’s Manir Muhammad Dan’Iya and NDC’s Aliyu Shamsudeen Ahmad.

Rivers and Bauchi also have 19 candidates each, while Gombe has 17. Delta and Oyo have 16 candidates apiece.

In Kwara, 12 candidates are listed, with APC candidate Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, facing PDP’s Bolakale Kawu and other contenders.

Zamfara has 16 candidates, including incumbent Governor Dauda Lawal, while Benue has six candidates. Governor Hyacinth Alia is seeking another term under the APC and will face contenders including former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Michael Aondoakaa, SAN, who is running on the PDP platform.

Kano Governor Abba Yusuf is also seeking re-election on the APC platform. Other candidates include Aminu Gwarzo of the NDC, Mohammed Raji of the Labour Party and Muhammad Dalhatu of the PDP.

In Ogun, 13 political parties have nominated governorship candidates. They include APC’s Solomon Adeola, PDP’s Oladipupo Adebutu and ADC’s Jimi Lawal.

Jigawa has 14 candidates, while Ebonyi Governor Francis Nwifuru will defend the APC ticket against PDP candidate Ifeanyi Odii and other contenders.

The APC has separately uploaded its governorship candidates on the INEC portal, with serving governors, political office holders and prominent politicians dominating the party’s list.

Among those seeking the APC ticket across the states are Kingsley Chinda in Rivers, Eric Opah in Abia, Mustapha Gubio in Borno, Jamilu Gwamna in Gombe, Aliyu Wadada in Nasarawa, Baba Malam Wali in Yobe and Bassey Otu in Cross River.

Others include Sheriff Oborevwori in Delta, Peter Mbah in Enugu, Umar Namadi in Jigawa, Dikko Radda in Katsina, Umar Bago in Niger, Nasir Idris in Kebbi, Caleb Mutfwang in Plateau, Umo Eno in Akwa Ibom, Mohammed Abubakar in Bauchi, Ahmed Aliyu in Sokoto and Agbu Kefas in Taraba.

The publication has also exposed notable changes and omissions.

In Nasarawa, former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, who reportedly secured the SDP governorship ticket after leaving the APC, is absent from the published list. Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, who defeated him in the APC nomination contest, is listed as the APC candidate.

Rivers is expected to produce another closely watched contest, with APC’s Kingsley Chinda Ogundu, NDC’s Lulu-Briggs Dumo Owukori and ADC’s Gabriel Pidomson among the candidates published by INEC.

Bayelsa and Edo will not hold governorship elections in 2027 because their next governorship contests fall outside the current electoral cycle. However, State House of Assembly elections will be conducted in both states.

In Bayelsa, INEC has listed 250 candidates for the 24 State House of Assembly seats.

Meanwhile, security preparations are also being intensified ahead of the election season.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly increased protective arrangements around presidential and governorship candidates as political activities gather momentum.

Prominent politicians reportedly covered by the arrangements include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

A security source said the arrangements were designed to be non-partisan and aimed at protecting candidates and their running mates during campaigns.

The source said the DSS had also identified locations considered vulnerable to violence and increased surveillance in such areas.

With the publication of the candidate particulars, parties and aspirants now have a clearer framework for the contests ahead, while voters can begin assessing the candidates who will appear on the ballot.

TheTraffic.ng reports that the governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027, with campaigns expected to run from September 2026 until February 4, 2027.
