Kelechi Iheanacho

Kelechi Iheanacho marked his return to the Super Eagles with a spectacular long-range goal as Nigeria fought back to secure a 3-3 draw against Russia in an international friendly on Tuesday.

The result provided a measure of encouragement for Eric Chelle’s team following the Super Eagles’ disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau.

Iheanacho’s goal was one of the major talking points of the encounter as the forward demonstrated his ability to contribute to the national team after returning to the squad.

Nigeria showed greater attacking intent against Russia, with the Super Eagles producing a much-improved performance compared with their previous outing.

The six-goal encounter provided Chelle with an opportunity to assess several players as he continues preparations for future competitive fixtures.

Nigeria’s ability to score three goals against a strong Russian side offered some positive signs for the coaching staff, particularly after the lacklustre display against Guinea-Bissau.

Iheanacho’s return was particularly significant as the forward has remained an experienced figure within the national team setup.

His long-range strike underlined his technical quality and provided an important moment for a Nigerian side seeking to rebuild confidence.

The Super Eagles had faced questions over their attacking efficiency and overall organisation following the heavy defeat to Guinea-Bissau.

The performance against Russia, however, demonstrated a greater attacking threat and resilience.
Chelle will now have to assess the lessons from the two friendly matches as he works towards establishing a consistent team and tactical approach.

The draw also provided an opportunity for younger players and other members of the squad to demonstrate their readiness for international football.

For the Super Eagles, the immediate priority remains translating the encouraging aspects of the performance into competitive matches.

Nigeria possesses significant attacking talent, but the team has struggled at various times to maintain consistency and defensive stability.

The three goals conceded against Russia will therefore remain an area of concern for the coaching staff.
While the result was not a victory, the comeback and attacking display offered a more positive response after the Guinea-Bissau setback.

Iheanacho’s contribution could also increase competition for places in the national team, particularly as Chelle continues to evaluate his options in attack.

The Super Eagles will need to build on the performance while addressing defensive lapses and improving their ability to control matches.

The 3-3 draw ultimately provided Nigeria with both encouragement and a reminder of the work still required.
For Iheanacho, however, his return was capped by a memorable goal that could provide renewed confidence as Nigeria prepares for its next international assignments.
