Finidi George

Rivers United head coach Finidi George has confidently declared that his current squad possesses significantly more quality than last season’s team. The former Super Eagles boss pointed to the club’s highly impressive, unbeaten start to the new Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign as solid proof of their ongoing progress.

Despite suffering a disappointing early exit in the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League, the Port Harcourt-based side has quickly shaken off the continental setback to dominate the domestic front.

After four matches in the current NPFL season, Finidi’s men have accumulated 10 points out of a possible 12. They remain unbeaten, dropping points only in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Nasarawa United in Lafia. The team has comfortably secured victories in their other three fixtures—all played at home—highlighted by a ruthless 5-0 thrashing of Kun Khalifat on Thursday.

Finidi, who led the team to a second-place finish behind Rangers International last season, believes that the overall quality of the club’s recent acquisitions has fundamentally elevated the squad’s capabilities.

“The players we signed this season are much better than last season,” Finidi stated during his post-match assessment following the dominant victory over Kun Khalifat. “I think the players are beginning to get it right, and I believe it will continue this way.”

While the team is currently enjoying a rich vein of form, Rivers United faces a highly demanding run of fixtures in the coming days. The “Pride of Rivers” will embark on a challenging northern tour, traveling to Katsina to face newly promoted Barau FC on Monday, before squaring off against Katsina United on Wednesday. The squad will then swiftly return to Port Harcourt to host Ikorodu City on Sunday.

Aware of the physical toll this schedule will take on his roster, Finidi emphasized the crucial importance of squad rotation and giving his key players adequate rest to maintain optimal fitness levels throughout the grueling stretch.

“We are having a couple of games coming up, and it’s going to be a tasking week or two weeks for the players,” Finidi explained. “So, I think it’s not bad to rest them so they will be fresh for the next game. It’s going to be hectic for the players.”
