Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest defender, Ola Aina, has highly tipped his Nigerian international teammate, Emmanuel Fernandez, to make a successful leap to the English Premier League.

Aina specifically pointed to the Rangers centre-back’s two-footedness and calm temperament as key attributes that make him tailor-made for England’s top flight.

The glowing endorsement came during a candid Snapchat exchange between the two players. Aina took the opportunity to urge his followers to keep a close watch on the 25-year-old defender, praising his technical abilities and mental fortitude.

“You lot need to know about this guy. Top, top player, right and left foot, he is top, and he has got a level head,” Aina stated in the video. When Aina playfully floated the idea of a transfer, asking, “Premier League soon?”, Fernandez confidently replied, “Amen.”

This public backing comes on the heels of a remarkably rapid career ascent for Fernandez. Since joining Scottish giants Rangers from Peterborough United in 2025, he has firmly proven his mettle on a large stage. During an outstanding debut season in Scotland, he swept the club’s Player of the Year award and earned a coveted spot in the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Year.

Although his start to the current campaign featured some early criticism following defensive errors against Falkirk and St Mirren, his form has since stabilized significantly alongside his centre-back partner, Olwethu Makhanya.

Aina’s specific praise for Fernandez’s comfort on both feet highlights a trait the defender prominently showcased during his first Super Eagles start against Jordan in March. In that match, he expertly controlled a cross from Bright Osayi-Samuel before seamlessly switching to his left foot to score Nigeria’s second goal.

Having spent part of his early career developing as a midfielder before settling into central defense, Fernandez possesses a natural comfort in carrying the ball out from the back. Pundits believe this versatility makes him highly press-resistant, which is an essential quality in the fast-paced Premier League where forwards quickly close down spaces and offer defenders very little time on the ball.

Beyond his technical skills, Fernandez has demonstrated a mature ability to handle the immense pressure that comes with top-tier football. A prime example of his level-headedness occurred recently during an intense Old Firm derby at Celtic Park; despite being booked just four minutes into the volatile match, he maintained his composure and played through the rest of the game without further incident.

Reflecting on his high-stakes environment, Fernandez acknowledged the heavy weight of expectations at his current club but noted that it fuels his growth.

“It is a lot of pressure playing for a team like Glasgow Rangers, but it is enjoyable,” Fernandez recently told Football Fans Tribe. “I feel like there will be moments in the season where you are under a bit of pressure, but that is where you show how good you are, and that you can get through it, that is how you get through it as a player.”

Fernandez’s unconventional route—progressing from Brentford’s academy through the gritty ranks of non-league football, and eventually starring for Peterborough United, Rangers, and the Super Eagles—highlights his deep resilience. A potential move to the Premier League would mark another massive step up for a player who, until just two years ago, was grinding outside the professional game’s top tiers in England.
