President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday tasked the newly decorated Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to strengthen discipline within the Nigeria Police Force, deepen inter-agency collaboration and restore public confidence in policing, as the country grapples with worsening insecurity.

Speaking at the decoration ceremony in Abuja, the President said the appointment came at a defining moment for national security, expressing confidence in the new police chief’s capacity to lead firmly and fairly.

“For you to assume this responsibility, I know your record,” Tinubu said, recalling Disu’s service in Lagos during his tenure as governor. “Lead firmly but fairly. Demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority.”

The President assured the IGP of his full backing to advance the security pillars of the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing the task ahead as daunting but achievable.

Nigeria, he noted, is currently challenged by banditry, terrorism and other violent crimes, requiring innovation, operational experience and strong leadership within the police hierarchy.

“You’ve been part of the thinking and innovation. The challenge before you is to exert leadership with the belief that Nigeria will prevail,” Tinubu said, adding that Nigerians expect measurable improvements in security outcomes.

He urged the new IGP to build on institutional experience within the force and to draw from the service record of the outgoing Inspector-General, Kayode Egbetokun, whom he praised for his dedication and commitment to maintaining law and order.

Tinubu extended the nation’s gratitude to Egbetokun for what he described as good leadership and faithful service, wishing him peace, good health and success in retirement.

The President also emphasized continuity within the force, noting that effective succession is part of institutional success. He expressed confidence that the incoming IGP, having previously served closely within the system, understands the operational demands of the office and would improve on existing structures.

“We all have the responsibility to ensure the security of lives and property of all Nigerians at this critical period,” Tinubu said.

The ceremony marked a formal transition in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, with expectations high that the new command will recalibrate strategy and reinforce professionalism in confronting the country’s complex security threats.
