President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
Egbetokun stepped down after submitting a letter citing pressing family considerations, according to a State House statement issued Tuesday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.
The President commended Egbetokun for what he described as decades of dedicated service to the Nigeria Police Force and the country, praising his professionalism and commitment to strengthening internal security during his tenure. Appointed in June 2023, he was serving a four-year term expected to end in June 2027 under the amended Police Act.
Tinubu said the decision to appoint Disu in acting capacity followed existing legal provisions and comes at a time of heightened security concerns across the country. He expressed confidence that the senior police officer’s operational experience and leadership would ensure stability and continuity in the force.
In line with the Police Act 2020, the President will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General. His name will subsequently be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security, improving institutional capacity, and ensuring the Nigeria Police Force remains professional and accountable in carrying out its constitutional duties.
