Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, has publicly endorsed the governorship ambition of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, while advocating for increased inclusion of women in political leadership across the state.
The traditional ruler made the declaration during a visit by Obasanjo to his palace, which he described as a private engagement. Speaking on the occasion, Oba Akinyemi highlighted Ogun State’s rich history of remarkable women leaders and stressed the importance of providing women with opportunities to assume positions of political authority.
“Whatever affects Ogun State affects Nigeria. If you look at the great women we have produced the likes of Efunsetan Aniwura, Madam Efunroye Tinubu, and even in contemporary times you will see that Ogun is blessed with exceptional women,” he stated.
The monarch specifically cited Mosunmola Dipeolu and other accomplished women as symbols of excellence and pride, emphasizing that their contributions demonstrate the potential of women to lead effectively.

Oba Akinyemi also praised Obasanjo’s professional and political track record, recalling her tenure as Commissioner for Health in Ogun State and subsequent service as a senator. He described her career as marked by competence, dedication, and a commitment to public service.
The monarch further lauded Obasanjo’s philanthropic work through the Iyanuwura Foundation, noting that the foundation has played a pivotal role in human capacity development and social welfare initiatives across Ogun State. He expressed confidence that her leadership skills and experience would enable her to advance the state’s development agenda if elected governor.
Oba Akinyemi’s endorsement adds to growing discussions about women’s participation in Nigerian politics, particularly in positions traditionally dominated by men. Analysts say such support from influential traditional leaders can significantly shape public perception and enhance women’s visibility in governance.
Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has in recent years strengthened her profile through public service, advocacy, and community development programs, earning recognition for her contributions to health, education, and social welfare in Ogun State.
The monarch concluded by urging the electorate and political stakeholders to recognise the value of women in leadership, stressing that inclusive governance is essential for sustainable development and the empowerment of future generations.
Observers note that the growing call for gender-inclusive politics in Ogun State reflects wider national conversations on women’s empowerment and equitable representation in government.
