Pate

Nigeria’s ongoing health sector reforms have received international recognition following the appointment of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, to the High-Level Panel of the Accra Reset Initiative.

The initiative, championed by Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama, is aimed at reshaping global health governance to promote equity, sovereignty, and stronger representation for developing nations. The panel comprises 18 leading policymakers, academics, and global health experts from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

Prof. Pate’s inclusion is seen as an endorsement of Nigeria’s health sector transformation under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the country’s growing influence in global health policy discussions.

The panel will develop proposals to reform the global health architecture, ensuring that countries in the Global South have greater participation in decision-making processes. It will also collaborate with a High-Level Consultative Group that includes top global institutions such as the World Health Organization, World Trade Organization, Global Fund, and Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

A globally respected public health expert, Prof. Pate has spent years working to strengthen health systems and expand access to quality healthcare. His appointment, analysts say, reflects renewed momentum in Nigeria’s Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, which focuses on system strengthening, domestic funding, and expanded partnerships.

The Accra Reset Initiative is part of broader continental efforts to reposition Africa as a key player in shaping global health and human capital development policies that directly affect its population.
