Jonathan Mairiga

Wikki Tourists striker Jonathan Mairiga has declared his ambition to claim the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Golden Boot, setting a bold target of scoring five goals in the final five matches of the season to edge out the current frontrunners.

Currently sitting on nine goals for the campaign, Mairiga is just two goals behind the league’s joint top scorers: Rangers International’s Godwin Obaje and Ikorodu City’s Joseph Arumala, who both have 11 goals.

With the season entering its critical final stretch, the Bauchi-based forward is confident he can overhaul the leaders and finish the season with a tally of 14 goals, a target he believes will secure him the prestigious top scorer’s prize.

“I believe I can win the highest goalscorers’ award,” Mairiga said in a recent interview. “I’ve scored nine goals, two behind the two leaders, but I believe I can score up to five goals in the remaining matches of the season.”

Mairiga’s late surge began with an eye on his team’s trip to Yenagoa, where Wikki Tourists are scheduled to face Bayelsa United at the Samson Siasia Stadium today. He emphasized that gaining momentum in this crucial fixture will be the catalyst for his Golden Boot chase.

“Yes, I think it could start this weekend, by the grace of God. Nothing is impossible. We’re going to Yenagoa with the mindset of getting the three points and, hopefully, it won’t be impossible for me to score,” he added.

The NPFL Golden Boot race has been intensely competitive this season. While Godwin Obaje has continued to prove his worth as one of the league’s most reliable and consistent forwards, Joseph Arumala’s stellar rise has been a major highlight of Ikorodu City’s campaign. To surpass both, Mairiga will need a highly prolific run of form over the closing five rounds.

Beyond his individual aspirations, Mairiga’s goals will be vital for Wikki Tourists as the club looks to finish the season on a strong note and improve their overall position in the league standings.

As the season nears its dramatic climax, the race for the Golden Boot promises an exciting finish over the coming weeks.
