Vice President Kashim Shettima has outlined an ambitious reform agenda aimed at transforming the Nigeria Police Force into a world-class institution capable of addressing modern security challenges.
Speaking in Abuja during activities marking National Police Day, Shettima said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to building a professional, technology-driven police system anchored on global best practices. He emphasised that meaningful national development cannot be achieved without strengthening the institutions responsible for maintaining law and order.
According to him, the reform strategy focuses on intelligence-led policing, advanced training, and the deployment of modern surveillance and forensic tools. He noted that the government is working to improve operational efficiency while ensuring that officers are better equipped to respond to emerging threats such as cybercrime, terrorism, and transnational criminal networks.
Shettima also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of police personnel, including better remuneration, housing, and healthcare support. He stressed that boosting morale within the force is critical to achieving long-term reform goals and restoring public confidence.
The Vice President further disclosed that partnerships with international security agencies and institutions are being strengthened to facilitate knowledge exchange and capacity building. He added that accountability and respect for human rights remain central to the reform process.
Security experts say the proposed overhaul, if effectively implemented, could reposition the Nigeria Police Force as a more responsive and trusted institution. However, they caution that sustained political will and adequate funding will be essential to translate policy commitments into tangible outcomes.
