The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commenced a major modernization project at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, focusing on runway rehabilitation and taxiway expansion.
Officials say the project is aimed at improving aircraft movement efficiency, reducing runway congestion, and enhancing overall flight safety. The upgrade includes resurfacing worn-out sections of the runway, improving lighting systems, and upgrading drainage infrastructure to handle heavy rainfall.
Aviation engineers working on the project have assured that international safety standards are being strictly followed to avoid disruption to flight operations. Night-time construction schedules have been introduced to minimize passenger inconvenience.
The airport, one of Nigeria’s busiest aviation hubs, has seen increased traffic in recent years due to rising domestic and regional connectivity.

Stakeholders in the aviation sector have welcomed the development, noting that runway conditions play a critical role in preventing delays and ensuring safe landings and takeoffs.
However, some airline operators have warned that partial closures during construction may lead to temporary schedule adjustments.
FAAN says the modernization project is part of a broader national aviation infrastructure renewal plan that will also cover Lagos, Enugu, and Kano airports.
