The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC has arrested a suspected fake football agent for allegedly defrauding aspiring players of over N11 million through a bogus overseas recruitment scheme.
According to the anti-graft agency, the suspect posed as an international football scout with connections to European clubs, promising lucrative contracts and trials abroad. Victims were reportedly asked to pay processing and travel fees, which the suspect allegedly diverted for personal use.
EFCC spokespersons disclosed that the arrest followed multiple petitions from victims who claimed they were deceived after months of waiting for opportunities that never materialised. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect operated under different aliases and used forged documents to appear credible.
Authorities said several incriminating items, including fake contracts, international passports, and electronic devices, were recovered during the operation. Investigators are currently analysing the materials to identify possible accomplices and additional victims.
The commission warned young athletes and their families to be cautious when dealing with agents, stressing the importance of verifying credentials through recognised football bodies before making any financial commitments.
Football stakeholders have also weighed in, calling for stronger regulation of player agents to prevent exploitation of vulnerable talents seeking international exposure.
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to tackling fraud in all sectors and urged members of the public to report suspicious activities promptly. The suspect is expected to be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.
