Nigerian striker Victor Boniface will not feature again for Werder Bremen this season, the German club has officially confirmed.
Despite the 25-year-old recently resuming light training after spending months on the sidelines with a severe knee injury, club officials have definitively ruled out his return before the current campaign concludes.
The Super Eagles forward, who joined the Bundesliga side on loan from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, suffered the knee injury during a training session in December.
The severe setback necessitated surgery in January, which was successfully performed in Innsbruck, Austria, under the supervision of renowned knee specialist Prof. Dr. Christian Fink.

Addressing the media regarding the player’s prospects, Bremen’s sporting director, Peter Niemeyer, delivered the definitive update.
He stated that while the club is pleased with every bit of progress Boniface is making as he completes his rehabilitation in Leverkusen, it remains impossible to predict exactly when he will be match-fit.
Niemeyer explicitly noted that due to the demanding timeline of the recovery process, the club does not expect him to take to the pitch for Werder Bremen again this season.
Despite the club’s cautious verdict, Boniface recently offered a glimmer of hope to his supporters.
The striker took to his X account this week to post a video of himself performing leg exercises, enthusiastically captioning it, “Help me post this one too, I dey training.” The post was met with an immediate outpouring of support and well-wishes from fans eager to see him back in action.
This latest development brings a premature end to a highly challenging season for Boniface at Bremen. He bows out of the campaign having made 11 Bundesliga appearances, registering two assists but failing to find the back of the net.
The physical setbacks have unfortunately been accompanied by a significant emotional toll. Boniface had already missed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury and was sidelined for Bremen’s January 2026 opener against Borussia Dortmund following complications in his rehabilitation.
In candid social media posts detailing his recovery journey, the striker recently opened up about his mental struggles, admitting that he had been “putting on a fake smile for over a year now.” Despite the physical and mental hardship, he expressed his gratitude to God, acknowledging that only God knows why these challenges are happening to him.
