The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s democratic credentials and reform-driven leadership, describing the National Assembly as an essential institution for strengthening democracy in Nigeria.
Speaking at a public event, Akpabio said the legislature remains a “veritable tool for deepening democracy,” stressing that without the parliament, democratic governance would not exist in the country.
The Senate President commended the President for several landmark ideas and reforms, noting that Tinubu’s pioneering role in establishing Independent Power Plants in Lagos has become a model adopted by other states across the federation.
He also urged the President to consider decentralising the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to improve efficiency in the power sector.

Akpabio further lauded the administration’s strong focus on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), recalling how reforms initiated in Lagos significantly boosted revenue generation. He said similar policies at the federal level have empowered states financially, reducing their dependence on borrowing for salaries and development projects.
“This has enabled states to avoid borrowing for salaries and projects, leading to widespread appreciation from governors,” Akpabio said.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also spoke at the event, commending President Tinubu for his visionary leadership and long-term impact on national development, noting significant progress in Ogun State since its creation five decades ago.
The event was attended by top government officials, including the Ministers of Finance, Aviation, and Communications, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, as well as several state governors and traditional rulers.
