Akor Adams

Nigerian striker Akor Adams proved to be the difference-maker for Sevilla, converting a crucial penalty to help his side secure a vital 2-1 LaLiga victory over Atlético Madrid at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.

The hard-fought win provided a massive boost to Sevilla’s survival hopes, pulling them out of the relegation zone and ending a dismal run of three consecutive league defeats.

Adams was the only Nigerian to feature in the starting lineups on the night. Atlético Madrid’s manager, Diego Simeone, opted for heavy rotation ahead of their looming UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg against Barcelona, leaving Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman on the bench. Meanwhile, Chidera Ejuke remained an unused substitute for Sevilla.

The hosts made an immediate impact in a high-pressure contest when they were awarded a penalty following a VAR review in the opening minutes, after Dani Martinez was penalized for bringing down Isaac Romero.

Adams stepped up and struck confidently, sending the ball past Atlético goalkeeper Juan Musso, who got a strong hand to the effort but couldn’t keep it out.

The goal marked Adams’ seventh in LaLiga this season. Beyond his decisive strike, the forward delivered a disciplined and effective attacking display. He completed 80 percent of his passes, added three progressive carries, provided a key pass, and registered an expected goals (xG) of 0.79, underscoring the high quality of his performance.

Atlético Madrid responded in the 35th minute when debutant Javier Boñar headed home a cross from Julio Díaz to level the score. However, Sevilla’s persistence paid off just before the half-time whistle as Nemanja Gudelj restored their lead with a well-placed finish from a set-piece.

The second half became a gritty, tactical affair with neither team managing to register a single shot on target after the break. Ademola Lookman was introduced for Atlético in the 71st minute in a bid to salvage an equalizer, but the Nigerian international struggled to break down a resolute Sevilla defense.

Sevilla held firm to claim all three points, a victory that significantly aids their fight against relegation, while further highlighting Akor Adams’ growing importance to the Andalusian club’s survival campaign.
