Wike-vs-Fubara

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, of reneging on an agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu to resolve the lingering political crisis in the state.

Wike made the allegation on Wednesday during a thank-you visit to the people of Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The former Rivers State governor claimed that the agreement, reached in the presence of President Tinubu, was intended to restore peace and stability to the state following months of political tension.

According to Wike, the deal was accepted by all parties involved, but he alleged that Governor Fubara later failed to honour its terms.

Wike said he would soon make public the full details of the agreement, insisting that Nigerians deserve to know the truth about the commitments made before the President. “An agreement was reached before Mr President to end this crisis, but unfortunately, it has not been respected,” he told supporters. “At the appropriate time, I will disclose everything that was agreed upon so the public can judge for themselves.”

The political crisis in Rivers State has persisted for several months, marked by divisions within the state government, tensions between the executive and the legislature, and a deep rift between Wike and his successor. Efforts by party leaders and national stakeholders to reconcile both camps have so far yielded limited results, despite presidential intervention.

During his address in Tai LGA, Wike thanked residents for their continued support and loyalty, noting that their backing had contributed to his political journey and achievements while serving as governor. He urged them to remain calm and steadfast, assuring them that the issues surrounding the crisis would eventually be resolved.

Political observers say Wike’s latest comments could further heighten tensions in Rivers State, especially as he prepares to reveal details of the alleged agreement. Analysts note that public disclosure of the deal may put pressure on Governor Fubara and other stakeholders to clarify their positions and recommit to peace efforts.

Supporters of Governor Fubara, however, have previously maintained that the governor is acting in the best interest of the state and has the constitutional authority to govern without undue interference. They argue that any agreement must align with democratic principles and the rule of law.

The Presidency has yet to respond to Wike’s claims, while the Rivers State Government has not issued an official statement on the alleged breach of the agreement. As the political standoff continues, residents of the state remain concerned about its impact on governance, development, and stability.

With Wike’s promise to unveil the details of the Tinubu-brokered deal, attention is now focused on the next steps in the unfolding political drama, as stakeholders await clarity on whether the crisis will escalate further or move closer to resolution.
