The United States government has ordered the recall of its Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, in a move linked to a broader diplomatic reshuffle under former President Donald Trump.
Diplomatic sources confirmed that Mills has officially exited Nigeria following the directive, bringing an end to his tenure as Washington’s top envoy to Abuja. The recall is said to be part of a strategic realignment of US foreign policy priorities.
During his time in Nigeria, Mills was actively involved in strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in areas of security cooperation, democratic governance, and economic engagement. His exit has sparked speculation over the future direction of US–Nigeria relations.

The US Embassy has assured Nigerians that diplomatic operations will continue smoothly, with a chargé d’affaires expected to oversee affairs until a new ambassador is appointed.
Nigerian officials have yet to issue a formal statement but sources within the foreign ministry described the development as routine, noting that diplomatic postings often change with political transitions in Washington.
Analysts say the recall underscores how shifts in US domestic politics can influence foreign engagements, though they do not expect major disruptions in relations between both countries.
