President Bola Tinubu has approved the Nigerian membership of the US-Nigeria Joint Working Group, advancing ongoing efforts to strengthen security cooperation between both countries.

The move follows the recent visit of a high-level Nigerian delegation to Washington, DC, led by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. The establishment of the Working Group was one of the key outcomes of that engagement.

Ribadu will head the Nigerian team, which brings together senior officials from strategic ministries and security institutions. Members include the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar; Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; and Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Bernard M. Doro.

Also on the team are the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Amb. Mohammed Mohammed; and Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

The secretariat will be coordinated by Idayat Hassan of the Office of the National Security Adviser and Paul Alabi of the Nigerian Embassy in the United States.

President Tinubu urged the members to collaborate closely with their US counterparts to ensure effective implementation of all agreements reached, noting that the Working Group represents a crucial step in strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and deepening bilateral ties.
