President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the renaming of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State, in honour of the late Islamic scholar and spiritual leader, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.

The institution will now be known as Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi University of Health Sciences, the President announced during a condolence visit to the Bauchi State Government and the family of the late cleric.

President Tinubu said the decision reflects the enduring legacy of Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi as a scholar, moral voice, and teacher whose influence transcended religion and geography. He described the late cleric as a man who devoted his life to knowledge, integrity, and service to humanity.

According to the President, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi stood as “a Nigerian conscience” who consistently preached values of honesty, tolerance, and upright character, adding that the honour was both fitting and deserved.

The visit, Tinubu noted, was to commiserate not only with Bauchi State but with the entire country, stressing that the passing of the renowned scholar was a national loss. He urged Nigerians to preserve and uphold the principles the cleric embodied so future generations could continue to draw lessons from his life.

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, thanked the President for personally visiting the state and for recognising the late scholar’s contributions. He recalled that President Tinubu had earlier dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima and a high-powered delegation to attend the funeral prayers, describing the gesture as a mark of deep national respect.

Governor Mohammed also highlighted the longstanding relationship between President Tinubu and the late Sheikh, noting that the warmth of the President’s reception in Bauchi reflected a shared bond with the people of the state.

Dr Bashir reaffirmed the family’s commitment to sustaining the cleric’s mission under the leadership of the Khalifa and commended Governor Mohammed for his continued support.

Dignitaries present at the visit included the Governors of Yobe and Plateau states, Mai Mala Buni and Caleb Mutfwang; Bauchi members of the National Assembly; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar; and Minister of Health and Social Development, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate.
