William Troost-Ekong

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has presented a national honour certificate to Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Nigerian football and his role in promoting the nation’s image on the global stage.

The presentation took place during an official ceremony at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where the President commended Troost-Ekong for his leadership, discipline and commitment to national service through sports. Tinubu described the defender as a symbol of resilience and patriotism whose performances have inspired millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.

Troost-Ekong was part of the Super Eagles squad that delivered memorable performances for Nigeria in recent international competitions, earning respect across Africa and beyond. As team captain, he has been widely praised for leading by example on and off the pitch, fostering unity within the squad and maintaining professionalism during high-pressure tournaments.

President Tinubu noted that the honour reflects the administration’s recognition of excellence in sports as a critical tool for national cohesion and youth inspiration. He said athletes who distinguish themselves while flying the Nigerian flag deserved to be celebrated alongside achievers in other sectors of national life.

“This recognition is not just about football; it is about national pride, discipline and service,” the President said, adding that Troost-Ekong’s career reflects the values of hard work and dedication the country seeks to instil in its young people.
