President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has spoken by telephone with Nigerian-British boxing star Anthony Joshua and his mother following the tragic road accident in Ogun State that left the former heavyweight champion injured and claimed the lives of two of his associates.
According to a State House press release on Sunday, the President personally conveyed his condolences to Joshua during the call, wished him well, and offered prayers for his recovery. Joshua, who is receiving treatment in hospital, assured the President that he is getting the best possible medical attention.
President Tinubu also spoke with Joshua’s mother to console her and pray with her over the loss. She expressed appreciation for the President’s concern and outreach during the difficult moment.
In addition, the President contacted Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital with Joshua and his family. Governor Abiodun assured the President that the state government would do everything necessary to ensure Joshua receives optimal care.
Earlier, President Tinubu, who is currently abroad, had expressed deep sympathy in a statement shared on his official X account following the accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. He described Joshua as a symbol of courage, discipline, and national pride, noting that his achievements have consistently brought honour to Nigeria.
The President urged unity and compassion in times of grief, calling on Nigerians to support one another as a people with a shared destiny. He prayed for Joshua’s speedy recovery and asked God to grant repose to the souls of the deceased associates, as well as strength and grace to their families.
