President Bola Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has submitted nominations for two key oil and gas regulatory positions to the Senate following the resignations of Engineer Farouk Ahmed and Gbenga Komolafe. Both officials, who were appointed in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, had led the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) respectively.

In letters to the Senate, President Tinubu requested expedited confirmation of Engineer Saidu Aliyu Mohammed as CEO of NMDPRA and Oritsemeyiwa Amanorisewo Eyesan as CEO of NUPRC. The move comes as part of the administration’s effort to ensure continuity and professional leadership in agencies critical to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan is an accomplished economist with nearly 33 years of experience at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and its subsidiaries. She retired as Executive Vice President, Upstream, in 2024 and previously held the position of Group General Manager, Corporate Planning and Strategy at NNPC from 2019 to 2023. Her extensive experience in upstream operations is expected to strengthen oversight and strategic development of Nigeria’s oil exploration and production sector.

Engineer Saidu Aliyu Mohammed, born in 1957 in Gombe, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, earned in 1981. He has held several key positions in the oil and gas industry, including Managing Director of Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company and Nigerian Gas Company. He has also chaired boards of the West African Gas Pipeline Company, Nigeria LNG subsidiaries, and NNPC Retail.

Mohammed played a pivotal role as Group Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of NNPC’s Gas & Power Directorate, providing strategic leadership for major projects and policy frameworks such as the Gas Masterplan, Gas Network Code, and contributions to the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). He has been instrumental in delivering landmark projects including the Escravos–Lagos Pipeline Expansion, the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano Gas Pipeline (AKK), and Nigeria LNG Train expansions.

The nominations signal President Tinubu’s commitment to sustaining institutional continuity and professional leadership in the oil and gas sector. The Senate is expected to review and confirm the appointments in line with constitutional procedures.

With seasoned professionals now proposed to helm NMDPRA and NUPRC, the government aims to enhance regulatory oversight, streamline operations, and support the ongoing development of Nigeria’s petroleum industry.
