President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the extension of the tenure of Idris Muhammad Bugaje, citing his significant contributions to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) reforms in Nigeria.
The decision, announced by the presidency, underscores the administration’s focus on strengthening skills acquisition and workforce development. Officials said Bugaje’s leadership has helped reposition technical education as a key driver of economic growth.
Under his stewardship, several reforms have been introduced to modernise vocational training institutions, improve curriculum standards, and align programmes with industry needs. The government believes continuity in leadership will ensure these reforms are fully implemented.
In a statement, the presidency noted that extending Bugaje’s tenure would allow ongoing projects to be completed and provide stability within the TVET sector. It added that Nigeria must prioritise practical skills development to reduce unemployment and boost productivity.
Education stakeholders have largely welcomed the move, describing it as a step in the right direction. Some experts, however, have called for increased funding and infrastructure support to complement the reforms.

Bugaje, in his response, expressed gratitude to the president for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to deepen ongoing reforms and expand access to quality technical education across the country.
The extension comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to diversify its economy and reduce reliance on oil revenues. Observers say a strong TVET system could play a crucial role in achieving this goal.
The presidency reaffirmed its commitment to education reforms, stating that building a skilled workforce remains central to national development plans.
