President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians to embrace peace, religious tolerance, and unity as Christians across the country mark Christmas, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting freedom of worship and ensuring national security for all cicitizens.
In his 2025 Christmas goodwill message released on Wednesday, the President said the season goes beyond celebration and festivities, calling on Nigerians to reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ and His message of grace, hope, peace, and goodwill to humanity. He extended warm Christmas greetings to Christians in Nigeria and around the world, while offering prayers for peace in the country, especially among people of different religious beliefs.
Tinubu said his government remains resolute in safeguarding religious freedom and protecting Nigerians of all faiths from violence, stressing that no citizen should suffer persecution because of their beliefs. He described peace and mutual respect as essential foundations for national stability and development.
“I remain committed to doing everything within my power to enshrine religious freedom in Nigeria and to protect all people of different faiths from violence,” the President said. “All Nigerians have the right to live, worship, and pursue their aspirations in safety and dignity.”
The President also acknowledged the significant contributions of Christians to Nigeria’s growth and social development, noting that Christian values and teachings have inspired many to care for the vulnerable and less privileged. He praised individuals and groups who work tirelessly to promote peace, harmony, and tolerance in their communities, describing their efforts as vital to nation-building.
According to Tinubu, the Christmas season serves as a reminder of hope, especially for Nigerians facing hardship and uncertainty. He said that despite the country’s challenges, faith remains a source of strength and reassurance that Nigeria will overcome its difficulties.
Reflecting on his time in office since assuming the presidency in 2023, Tinubu reiterated his administration’s “unyielding commitment” to the security, unity, and stability of the nation. He said this commitment is anchored in both divine guidance and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, adding that shared values across faiths must continue to bind Nigerians together as one people.
“The love for God and love for humanity is at the heart of all the great faiths,” he said, noting that these common principles should guide citizens toward peaceful coexistence and national resilience.
The President disclosed that throughout the year, he engaged with prominent leaders from Nigeria’s two major religions amid concerns about insecurity and religious intolerance. He said these engagements would be strengthened to improve collaboration between government and religious institutions, prevent conflict, and promote peace across the country.
Tinubu also used the message to address Nigerians travelling during the festive period, urging motorists and other road users to exercise patience and discipline. He wished travellers safe journeys and safe returns to their destinations, emphasizing the importance of caution during the busy holiday season.
Expressing confidence in Nigeria’s future, the President said the country would continue the task of building a stronger and more united nation that future generations would be proud of. He encouraged Nigerians to draw strength from faith and collective responsibility as the year comes to an end.
Tinubu concluded by wishing Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year in advance, reaffirming his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as President and his commitment to leading the country toward peace, unity, and progress.
