TikTok has imposed a temporary overnight restriction on its LIVE feature for users across Nigeria, citing an ongoing safety investigation aimed at protecting its online community. The measure, which took effect late Sunday, prevents creators and viewers from accessing live broadcasts between 11pm and 5am daily.
The development was first communicated through an in-app notification sent to Nigerian users at midnight. The system alert, titled “LIVE Notices”, stated: “TikTok LIVE Update in Nigeria: We’re temporarily limiting LIVE late at night in Nigeria as part of our investigation to ensure our platform remains safe and our community stays protected.”
Creators who attempted to go live after 11pm found the feature inaccessible, with affected accounts displaying a “No Access” label. The restriction also blocked Nigerian users from watching live streams originating from other countries during the affected hours.
Before the cut-off period, several local creators reported that their ongoing sessions were abruptly terminated, prompting confusion until the nationwide notification went out. Many users also took to the platform to express concern over the unexplained suspension of night-time LIVE interactions, which remain a major avenue for entertainment, influencer engagement, and e-commerce activities on TikTok.
While TikTok did not provide details on what triggered the safety review, the company indicated that the restriction is temporary and linked to platform integrity concerns. LIVE sessions—often used for real-time conversations, product showcases, and community engagement—have previously drawn scrutiny globally due to risks such as inappropriate content, harassment, and unsafe interactions among minors.

Nigeria is one of TikTok’s fastest-growing markets in Africa, and live streaming has become an increasingly popular feature, especially among young creators. The overnight ban marks one of the platform’s most sweeping temporary measures in the country.
TikTok said the limitation will remain in place until the investigation is concluded, but did not specify a timeline for restoring full access.
Creators and digital marketers who rely heavily on late-night engagement are awaiting further clarification, as the restriction significantly affects peak interaction hours for many Nigerian users.
