Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday departed Johannesburg for Luanda, Angola, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 7th African Union–European Union (AU-EU) Summit scheduled to hold from November 24 to 25, 2025. His departure comes immediately after concluding Nigeria’s engagements at the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in South Africa.
Shettima is expected to join Heads of State and Government from across Africa and Europe for high-level deliberations aimed at strengthening political, economic, and developmental cooperation between the AU and EU. The summit, taking place in Angola’s capital, will focus on shared challenges affecting both regions and explore strategies for deeper collaboration.
The 7th AU-EU Summit will bring together top government officials, young leaders, innovators, and civil society organisations from both continents. Their discussions will centre on critical global issues including climate change, inclusive and sustainable development, infrastructure expansion, digital economy advancement, creative industry growth, manufacturing, and agribusiness optimization.
Summit organisers say the forum is intended to craft actionable recommendations that can drive joint initiatives and shape future AU-EU partnerships. Stakeholders will also assess progress from previous summits and propose new frameworks for cooperation in areas such as energy transition, youth empowerment, and regional security.
Vice President Shettima is expected to hold bilateral engagements on the sidelines of the summit, underscoring Nigeria’s push for stronger international cooperation to support national priorities. These include attracting foreign investment, advancing digital innovation, expanding agro-industrial value chains, and mobilising resources for green growth and climate resilience.
Policy analysts note that Nigeria’s participation in the AU-EU summit is crucial at a time when the Tinubu administration is accelerating reforms across economic, social, and security sectors. With the EU serving as one of Africa’s largest development partners, discussions in Luanda are expected to influence future donor commitments, trade ties, and strategic collaborations.

Shettima’s attendance at the AU-EU summit comes immediately after his representation of President Tinubu at the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg. During the G20 engagements, Nigeria pushed for fairer global financial systems, increased development financing, and improved governance over critical global sectors such as minerals and technology.
Diplomatic observers view the Vice President’s back-to-back participation in both summits as part of a broader diplomatic strategy to reinforce Nigeria’s voice within global decision-making platforms.
According to the Presidency, Vice President Shettima will return to Nigeria at the end of the AU-EU Summit in Luanda. His visit is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s strategic alliances and secure international partnerships needed to support the country’s development agenda.
