Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has confirmed his intention to contest the 2027 elections, pledging to mobilize supporters across Nigeria despite alleged resistance from the federal government.
Speaking on Saturday at the OBIDIENT Conference and Official Declaration for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Uyo, Obi asserted that nothing would deter him from participating in the next presidential race, saying he would run “even if the elections are being held figuratively in their bedroom.”
Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election, emphasized the urgency of rescuing Nigeria from decades of poor governance. Addressing attendees at the conference themed “Activating the PO Effect in ADC,” he called on Nigerians to join forces in shaping a better future for younger generations who, he warned, would otherwise bear the consequences of continued mismanagement.
“I have it on good authority that the federal government does not want me to contest, but I will not be intimidated. We must work together to reclaim our nation and secure a prosperous future for all Nigerians,” Obi said.
The former governor highlighted the importance of grassroots engagement and national unity, urging citizens to actively participate in political processes and support candidates committed to accountability, transparency, and inclusive governance.
Obi’s remarks come amid growing speculation over potential candidates for the 2027 elections, with political stakeholders watching closely to gauge his influence and ability to rally support across party lines. Analysts say his declaration signals an early start to electioneering and could reshape alliances in the coming years.
During the event, Obi also urged his supporters to build momentum for the ADC, framing the party as a platform for driving meaningful reforms and creating a governance model focused on efficiency and citizen-centric policies.
Political observers noted that Obi’s renewed commitment to contesting signals his intent to remain a central figure in Nigeria’s political landscape, leveraging his popularity and past campaign experience to influence voter sentiment and policy debates ahead of 2027.
The conference attracted party officials, civil society advocates, and supporters who expressed optimism that Obi’s candidacy could inspire a new era of leadership and governance reform in Nigeria.
