Iyabo Ojo

The glitz and glamour of the Nigerian film industry was momentarily eclipsed this week by a high-profile standoff between three of Nollywood’s biggest titans.

What was meant to be a night of celebration for actress and producer Iyabo Ojo during the premiere of her latest cinematic offering, The Return of Arinzo, quickly devolved into a viral controversy that has left the social media landscape fractured and the industry’s internal politics laid bare.

The drama began at the Balmoral Convention Centre on Sunday, where a viral video captured a tense exchange or lack thereof between box-office rivals Funke Akindele and Toyin Abraham. In the footage, Abraham is seen approaching a table where Akindele was seated alongside Iyabo Ojo and Mercy Aigbe. Despite Abraham’s attempt to offer a respectful greeting, Akindele appeared to pointedly ignore her colleague, maintaining a fixed gaze elsewhere.

The visible embarrassment of Abraham, who eventually moved on to greet other guests, sparked an immediate firestorm. The fallout was swift: both actresses reportedly unfollowed each other on Instagram shortly after the event, signaling the end of a fragile peace that many hoped had been brokered behind the scenes.

Facing a barrage of unprintable names and accusations of taking sides, Iyabo Ojo took to social media to provide an exhaustive clarification of her role in the saga. In a candid address, Ojo revealed the deep-seated history of her mediation efforts, admitting that she had once publicly dragged Akindele in defense of Abraham, an action she now describes as a mistake.

“I tried my best, cried, knelt down, and begged them to make peace,” Ojo shared, detailing how she had previously successfully brought the two together.

According to Ojo, the reconciliation came with a strict no-shading policy on social media. However, this truce allegedly shattered in December 2025, when Abraham raised concerns about the sabotage of her movie in cinemas. Although no names were mentioned, fans quickly pointed fingers at Akindele, reigniting the beef that culminated in Sunday’s public snub.

Adding a new layer to the controversy, Ojo addressed rumors that she had sided with Akindele because Abraham declined to be in her new film. Ojo confirmed that Abraham was originally cast in The Return of Arinzo but pulled out at the last minute, citing exhaustion and travel plans. While Ojo admitted the withdrawal was upsetting and forced a costly rewrite of the script, she insisted the two had moved past the professional hiccup.

The reactions from social media users, as captured in the wake of Ojo’s statement, reflect a deep divide. While some users, like uncommon_sexiness, suggested that Ojo’s write-up proves she is indirectly taking sides, others, such as ayaadewale_, offered a grimmer outlook on industry friendships, noting that 3 is a crowd.

The prevailing sentiment among fans, however, remains one of caution. Commenters like zionzion2021 and toyyibaholayinka urged Toyin Abraham to avoid both parties and focus on herself to prevent further public embarrassment.

Iyabo Ojo has made her final stance clear that she is officially withdrawing from her role as a mediator.

“I honestly don’t want to get involved anymore,” she stated, calling for the public to respect her decision while expressing hope that the two parties will find peace on their own terms.
