Odumeje

Controversial Anambra-based cleric, Chukwuemeka Cyril Ohanaemere, popularly known as Prophet Odumeje, has ignited fresh debate across Nigeria’s religious circles after publicly challenging fellow pastors to a miracle contest. The outspoken preacher issued the challenge while addressing his congregation in Anambra, declaring that no spiritual leader matches his abilities or supernatural strength.

Odumeje, famous for his flamboyant sermons and unconventional style, told worshippers that he remains “the greatest pastor in the world,” adding that he possesses extraordinary powers he has yet to fully reveal. According to him, the proposed contest would settle, once and for all, questions surrounding authenticity and divine authority among Nigerian clerics.

The preacher, often a polarizing figure online, insisted that many pastors who criticise him secretly envy his “spiritual capacity.” He said that any pastor confident in their anointing should step forward for a public demonstration of miracles, which he claimed would expose pretenders and affirm true spiritual hierarchy.

His comments instantly went viral on social media, where supporters hailed his confidence while critics dismissed his remarks as theatrics aimed at maintaining relevance. Some commenters argued that spirituality should not be turned into public competition, while others said a miracle challenge could reveal the truth about certain religious practices.

Religious scholars have also weighed in on the controversy. Some described Odumeje’s statements as characteristic of his brand of ministry, noting that he thrives on bold proclamations and dramatic displays. Others warned that such challenges could deepen divisions within Nigeria’s already fragmented Christian landscape.

Odumeje, whose ministry has grown through viral videos of his energetic preaching style and unusual expressions, did not provide specifics on the format, timing, or venue of the proposed miracle contest. However, his congregation responded with cheers during the service, reaffirming the strong following he maintains within his church.

The cleric’s declaration adds to a long list of attention-grabbing statements associated with him, from claims of mystical abilities to his famous self-description as “Indaboski Bahose.” Despite frequent criticism, he continues to command a significant fanbase both offline and online.

As reactions intensify, no major pastor has publicly accepted his challenge. Religious observers say the episode highlights ongoing tensions between charismatic preachers, public perception, and the growing spectacle-driven nature of some contemporary ministries in Nigeria.
