The National Assembly of Nigeria has approved a ₦1.5 trillion budget for the Nigerian Army for the 2026 fiscal year, underscoring the government’s focus on strengthening national security amid persistent threats.

Lawmakers said the allocation is designed to enhance operational readiness, modernise equipment, improve troop welfare, and address emerging security challenges across the country. The approval followed deliberations on defence spending priorities and security assessments.

Officials noted that a significant portion of the budget will go toward procurement of advanced military hardware, training programmes, and logistics support. Funds are also earmarked for barracks rehabilitation, healthcare services, and allowances for personnel.

Security analysts say the move reflects Nigeria’s commitment to reinforcing its armed forces as they confront insurgency, banditry, and other internal security concerns. “Sustained investment is essential for effectiveness and morale,” one expert said.

Legislators emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in the utilisation of defence funds. Oversight committees pledged to monitor implementation to ensure value for money and measurable outcomes.

Military authorities welcomed the approval, describing it as a boost to ongoing modernisation and capacity-building efforts. They stressed that improved funding would enhance operational efficiency and response capabilities.

Observers say while increased defence spending is critical, broader security gains will depend on intelligence coordination, regional cooperation, and socio-economic interventions addressing root causes of instability.
