Tyre Burning, Nasarawa

The Nasarawa State Police Command has announced a total ban on the burning of used tyres during crossover night activities ahead of New Year celebrations, warning that anyone found violating the directive will be arrested and prosecuted.

The order, issued by the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, is part of measures to ensure public safety, protect lives and property, and prevent environmental degradation during the festive period. The police said the ban is aimed at averting accidents, fires, and other hazards associated with tyre burning, which has become a common practice during celebrations.

Speaking on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, emphasized that the directive was necessary due to the recurring damage tyre burning causes to both public and private infrastructure. He noted that the practice not only destroys roads and buildings but also poses serious health and safety risks to residents.

“The police will not tolerate any act that endangers lives or property,” SP Nansel said. “Individuals found burning tyres during crossover activities will be arrested and face prosecution according to the law.”

Authorities explained that tyre burning releases toxic smoke and particulate matter, contributing to air pollution and respiratory problems, while also increasing the risk of accidental fires. In addition to health hazards, the flames and smoke often obscure vision on roads, leading to traffic accidents and potential loss of lives.

The Nasarawa State Police Command urged residents to celebrate responsibly and adhere to safety guidelines issued by security agencies. The command also called on community leaders and vigilante groups to assist in enforcing the ban and monitoring high-risk areas.

Security agencies have assured the public that patrols will be intensified across urban and rural areas during the festive period to ensure compliance with the directive. Police units will be deployed to major streets, markets, and gathering spots where New Year celebrations are expected, aiming to maintain peace, order, and a safe environment for all.

The ban aligns with broader government and community efforts to promote safe celebrations, prevent accidents, and mitigate environmental damage during public events. Residents have been encouraged to explore alternative, safe ways to mark the New Year, such as fireworks displays and indoor celebrations, while respecting public property and communal safety.

By enforcing this ban, Nasarawa State authorities hope to minimize accidents, injuries, and property damage commonly associated with crossover night festivities, ensuring that residents welcome 2026 in a safe and secure environment.
