Kenneth Eze

Constitutional reform advocate Kenneth Eze has proposed the adoption of a single 16-year term for presidents, arguing that the model would promote long-term policy planning and reduce the distractions of re-election campaigns.

Eze said the proposal aims to encourage continuity in governance, minimise political instability, and allow administrations sufficient time to implement transformative reforms. He presented the idea during a policy dialogue on democratic reforms.

Supporters argue that extended single terms could curb short-termism and political opportunism, while critics warn of risks including weakened accountability and democratic checks.

Political analysts say the suggestion is likely to spark debate among lawmakers, civil society groups, and constitutional experts. Any amendment, they note, would require broad consensus and legislative approval.
