The Kano State Government has banned the activities of a group operating as “Independent Hisbah Fisabilillahi” and directed security agencies to immediately crack down on its members across the state.
The directive was announced on Wednesday as the government warned that no individual or group is permitted to operate any form of religious enforcement or security outfit outside the legally recognized Hisbah Board established by the state.
Officials said the banned group has been operating without legal backing, allegedly engaging in activities that undermine public order, duplicate official responsibilities, and pose a security risk to residents.
According to the government, only the Kano State Hisbah Board is authorized by law to carry out moral and social enforcement duties within the state. Any parallel structure, it said, amounts to illegality and will not be tolerated.
Security agencies have been instructed to identify, arrest, and prosecute members of the Independent Hisbah Fisabilillahi found operating in any part of Kano. The government also ordered the immediate dismantling of the group’s offices and operational bases.
Authorities stressed that the decision was taken to prevent abuse of power, curb intimidation of citizens, and ensure that law enforcement activities remain coordinated and accountable.
The state government further cautioned residents against associating with or supporting the banned group, urging the public to report any sightings or activities linked to it to the appropriate security agencies.
Officials reaffirmed Kano’s commitment to maintaining law and order, religious harmony, and the rule of law, noting that while moral guidance remains important, it must be carried out strictly within the framework of existing laws and institutions.
The ban marks the latest move by the Kano State Government to rein in unauthorized groups and strengthen centralized control over security and religious enforcement structures in the state.
