The Federal Government has assured it is ready to tackle the ecological challenges plaguing Ibadan, Oyo State, following a high-level appeal from the city’s traditional ruler.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON, made the pledge on Thursday when the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Adewolu Ladoja, led a delegation to his office in Abuja.

Akume emphasized the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting Ibadan, particularly in addressing long-standing flooding and environmental hazards. He also called on notable Nigerians, especially alumni of the University of Ibadan, to contribute to the city’s development.

“We will do everything we can to support the development of Ibadan, especially in resolving the ecological problems that have long plagued the town,” Akume said, praising Oba Ladoja’s leadership and dedication to his people.

Oba Ladoja highlighted the severe impact of recurring floods, which have led to loss of lives, property destruction, and disruption of economic activities across the city. He urged urgent intervention from relevant federal agencies and appealed for Ibadan to be prioritized given its size, population, and historical significance.

“I have come here because we have an ecological problem in Ibadan, and I know the Secretary to the Government of the Federation can resolve it, given his past role in making the Ogunpa Channelisation Project successful,” the monarch said. He noted that many affected areas, including less-publicized neighborhoods, require attention alongside high-profile zones like Ogunpa.

The Olubadan assured the SGF of the traditional institution’s support in mobilizing communities for any federal intervention. The delegation included Senators AbdulFatai Buhari and Sharafadeen Alli, Chief Ademola Alli, Prince Ade Adekanbi, and Hon. Nureni, among others.
