The Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs has cleared Ambassador-designate Femi Fani-Kayode, the former Minister of Aviation, to proceed with his ambassadorial appointment, Naija News reports. Fani-Kayode, who also served as Minister of Culture, received the customary “bow-and-go” approval during his screening on Thursday.
Fani-Kayode appeared before the Senate committee for a brief session, during which he introduced himself and responded to preliminary formalities. Following the introductions, in keeping with Senate tradition for certain ambassadorial screenings, he was asked to “take a bow and leave,” a procedural gesture indicating swift approval without extended questioning.
Also accorded the same privilege was former Minister of Interior and retired Army General Abdulrahman Dambazau. Both nominees were cleared in the same session, reflecting the committee’s recognition of their previous public service and diplomatic experience.
The “bow-and-go” procedure is a longstanding Senate practice applied to ambassadorial nominees with notable public service records or minimal controversies surrounding their appointments. In this instance, it underscored the committee’s confidence in both Fani-Kayode and Dambazau to represent Nigeria abroad effectively.
Fani-Kayode’s nomination adds to his extensive career in public service, spanning multiple ministerial portfolios and diplomatic engagements. His experience in aviation and cultural affairs positions him for strategic roles in fostering Nigeria’s foreign relations and international partnerships.
Dambazau, similarly, brings a wealth of experience from his tenure as Minister of Interior and as a retired military officer, equipping him with the discipline and administrative insight necessary for diplomatic duties.
The committee’s clearance now allows the President to forward the nominees to the full Senate for final confirmation before they are formally appointed to their respective ambassadorial positions.
Observers note that swift screenings such as this help expedite Nigeria’s diplomatic appointments, ensuring key missions abroad are staffed without undue delay. It also reflects a level of confidence in the nominees’ competence and integrity, which are crucial for representing Nigeria’s interests on the international stage.

Following Thursday’s session, both Fani-Kayode and Dambazau are expected to complete any remaining procedural requirements, including official confirmation by the full Senate and formal credential presentation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
With these approvals, the government aims to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic corps, leveraging the expertise of seasoned public officials to advance national interests, deepen bilateral ties, and engage in multilateral diplomacy.
The swift clearance of Fani-Kayode and Dambazau is likely to be welcomed by both political observers and stakeholders in the diplomatic community, highlighting a smooth confirmation process for high-profile ambassadorial nominees.
