Jumoke Akinjide

A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Jumoke Akinjide, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the need to align with a “progressive national agenda.”

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, Akinjide said his decision followed extensive consultations with political associates, constituents, and family members. He described the move as a strategic step toward contributing more effectively to national development.

According to him, recent internal crises within the PDP had weakened the party’s cohesion and reduced its ability to function as a credible opposition. He added that the APC, under the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, offers a clearer roadmap for governance and economic recovery.

Party sources confirmed that Akinjide has already completed his registration with the APC at his ward level, signaling his readiness to participate fully in party activities ahead of future elections.

Reacting to the development, PDP officials described the defection as “unfortunate but not unexpected,” noting that the party remains focused on rebuilding and strengthening its internal structures.

Meanwhile, APC stakeholders in the Federal Capital Territory welcomed Akinjide, describing him as an experienced administrator whose entry would boost the party’s grassroots mobilization and policy direction.

Political analysts say the defection could have ripple effects, especially in Abuja and surrounding regions, where Akinjide commands significant influence. They also noted that such high-profile movements may reshape alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As Nigeria’s political landscape continues to evolve, observers believe more realignments may occur in the coming months, driven by shifting loyalties and strategic calculations among key actors.
