Former Chippa United goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng, has publicly questioned the timing and logic behind Stanley Nwabali’s sudden departure from the club, casting doubt on the Super Eagles shot-stopper’s chances of securing a move to a top side.
In an interview with KickOff, Motsoeneng expressed skepticism over Nwabali’s decision to hand in a transfer request without a concrete destination in sight, suggesting that the Nigerian international may have been misled by his representatives.
Motsoeneng, who had a stint with the Chilli Boys during his playing days, argued that Nwabali has not yet done enough to prove he is too big for the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
“I think for Nwabali to terminate at Chippa United, obviously, there might be an agent who told him there’s an interest somewhere,” Motsoeneng said. “I don’t think Nwabali has outgrown the PSL. Chippa is fighting relegation, and for Nwabali, he needed to prove at Chippa without reasonable doubt if he had outgrown the PSL.”
The former goalkeeper also pointed to a decline in Nwabali’s recent performances as a reason for concern.
He noted that since returning from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the 29-year-old’s stock rose significantly, his domestic form has not matched his international exploits.
“Since this season started, Nwabali’s performance has not been where it should have been. After coming back from AFCON in Morocco, maybe he thought he was going to receive an offer from outside, and that didn’t happen,” Motsoeneng added.
Analyzing the landscape of South African football, Motsoeneng insisted that a move to one of the country’s “Big Three”: Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, or Mamelodi Sundowns, seems unlikely due to their current goalkeeping hierarchies.
“If he is aiming to move to one of the big three, where will he go?” he asked, citing established first-choice keepers like Brandon Petersen at Kaizer Chiefs and Ronwen Williams at Sundowns as major roadblocks.
Nwabali’s exit was confirmed on Thursday after Chippa United announced they had agreed to mutually terminate his contract following his request to leave.
The goalkeeper, who became a fan favorite after his heroics at the 2023 AFCON, has stated he is open to joining any club that meets his ambition, though he admitted no formal offers are currently on the table.
