The Catholic Diocese of Issele-Uku in Delta State has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of a senior priest, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Stephen Chukwuma, who reportedly collapsed while delivering a homily during a church service.
The late cleric, aged 63, was the Parish Priest of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Boji-Boji Agbor, in Ika South Local Government Area, and also served as the Regional Vicar of the Agbor Region within the diocese.
The Diocese confirmed his death in an official statement issued by its Director of Communications, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Charles Uganwa.
According to the statement, Fr. Chukwuma passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, during the New Year’s Eve Mass.
“With total resignation to the will of God, the Bishop, priests, religious and lay faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Issele-Uku announce the call to glory of Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Stephen Chukwuma,” the statement read.
It added that the priest collapsed in the course of his homily and was later confirmed dead, a development that shocked parishioners and fellow clergy who were present at the service.
Eyewitnesses at the church described the incident as sudden and deeply distressing, noting that the priest had appeared active and composed moments before he slumped at the altar. Efforts were reportedly made to revive him before he was pronounced dead.
Fr. Chukwuma was widely known within the diocese for his pastoral dedication and years of service to the Church. As Regional Vicar of the Agbor Region, he played a key role in coordinating pastoral activities and supporting priests across parishes under his supervision.
The late priest hailed from Akumazi-Umuocha in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State. Members of his hometown and the wider Catholic community have since expressed shock and sorrow over his sudden demise.
Parishioners of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church described him as a devoted shepherd who was passionate about preaching, community service, and spiritual guidance. Many said his death, which occurred in the very act of proclaiming the Gospel, was both painful and symbolic.
Since the announcement of his passing, tributes have continued to pour in from priests, religious organisations, and lay faithful across Delta State and beyond, all acknowledging his contributions to the growth of the Church and the moral formation of believers.
The Diocese is yet to announce details of burial arrangements but urged the faithful to continue to pray for the repose of his soul and for the strength of the Church during this period of loss.
As the Catholic community in Issele-Uku comes to terms with the tragedy, Fr. Chukwuma is being remembered as a priest who remained committed to his calling until his final moments.
