The Nigeria Customs Service’s Operation Whirlwind has auctioned 14,875 litres of Premium Motor Spirit worth N14.875 million to members of the public, marking another significant victory in the ongoing battle against petroleum product smuggling across Nigeria’s borders.

The auction took place on Tuesday at the Customs Training College in Ikeja, Lagos, with the contraband seized during an intensive crackdown on illegal fuel exportation networks operating within the Lagos and Ogun states axis.

National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Abubakar Aliyu, a Deputy Controller of Customs, revealed that the petrol was intercepted while being illegally exported to a neighbouring country in flagrant violation of national laws governing petroleum product distribution and movement.

The seizure represents the culmination of a focused four-week enforcement operation targeting coordinated smuggling networks involved in diverting petroleum products intended for domestic consumption. During this period, operatives successfully intercepted 595 jerrycans of petrol across key smuggling flashpoints including Imeko, Ilara, Ilaro, Idiroko, and Seme-Badagry.

“Over the past four weeks, acting on credible intelligence, our operatives successfully dismantled a coordinated smuggling network involved in the illegal exportation of PMS to neighbouring countries. During this operation, a total of 595 jerrycans were intercepted, amounting to 14,875 litres. These seizures were made across key flashpoints, including Imeko, Ilara, Ilaro, Idiroko, and Seme-Badagry. The total duty-paid value of the seized products stands at N14.875m,” Aliyu stated.

The products were seized through dedicated enforcement operations supported by reliable intelligence gathering, demonstrating the operation’s commitment to preventing illegal fuel diversion on a coordinated basis.

Aliyu emphasized that petroleum smuggling represents far more than a mere customs violation. The illegal export of fuel undermines the national economy, deprives the government of vital revenue, disrupts the legitimate domestic supply chain, and creates artificial scarcity that negatively impacts ordinary citizens struggling to access fuel for essential activities.

Beyond economic considerations, Aliyu highlighted that petroleum smuggling fuels criminal networks that pose direct threats to national security and economic stability. The organized nature of smuggling operations requires coordinated enforcement responses and intelligence-led operations to dismantle these networks effectively.

The public auction represents a transparent approach to disposing of seized products in accordance with legal provisions and established protocols. Rather than allowing smuggled fuel to remain outside the legitimate supply chain, the Customs Service ensures that intercepted products are reintegrated into domestic markets through authorized channels.

The auction was conducted with participation from relevant government agencies, security personnel, civil society groups, and media representatives, guaranteeing transparency, accountability, and integrity throughout the disposal process.

Aliyu acknowledged the strategic direction provided by the Office of the National Security Adviser, headed by Nuhu Ribadu, whose leadership has strengthened inter-agency coordination and improved operational efficiency across enforcement activities.

He also commended the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority for its technical expertise and regulatory oversight, which ensure that enforcement measures adhere to international best practices while effectively addressing vulnerabilities in the distribution network that smugglers exploit.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and his management team received praise for what Aliyu described as visionary leadership and unwavering support that has enabled Operation Whirlwind to achieve measurable success in combating fuel smuggling.

Operation Whirlwind represents a targeted anti-smuggling initiative designed specifically to prevent illegal movement of petroleum products across Nigeria’s borders. The operation’s core mandate includes safeguarding national economic interests, strengthening energy security, and ensuring that petroleum products allocated for domestic consumption remain within legitimate supply channels.

Aliyu issued a stern warning to fuel smugglers, declaring that the era of impunity has ended. He emphasized that Operation Whirlwind remains determined, proactive, and intelligence-led in its approach, pledging persistent tracking, interception, and dismantling of smuggling networks wherever they operate.

The Customs official called on members of the public, particularly residents of border communities, to support security agencies by providing accurate and timely information about smuggling activities. He emphasized that combating petroleum product smuggling is a shared responsibility requiring genuine public cooperation to safeguard Nigeria’s economic interests.

The auction underscores the government’s commitment to securing fuel supplies for domestic use and protecting the national treasury from revenue losses caused by illegal exports. As fuel scarcity and high prices continue to affect Nigerians, preventing diversion of products through smuggling networks becomes increasingly critical to ensuring adequate domestic supply at stable prices.
