A member of the Catholic Knights of St. John has renounced his faith after expressing deep disappointment over what he described as the cathedral’s failure to honour the legacy of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
The knight, whose identity was withheld, reportedly announced his decision following a memorial service where, according to him, no formal recognition was given to Ubah’s contributions to the church and society. The development has sparked debate among parishioners and the wider Christian community.
In a statement circulated on social media, the former knight said he felt “betrayed and disillusioned” by the cathedral’s silence, arguing that Ubah was a devoted Catholic who supported church projects and community development throughout his lifetime.

“This was someone who gave so much to the church and the people. Ignoring his legacy at such a moment was painful and unacceptable,” he said, adding that the incident forced him to question his continued membership in the faith.
Church officials, however, declined to comment directly on the matter, stating only that liturgical decisions are guided by established protocols and not influenced by public pressure or personal status.
Reactions among parishioners have been mixed. While some sympathised with the knight’s feelings, others criticised his decision, insisting that faith should not be contingent on public recognition of individuals.
Religious scholars have described the incident as a reflection of broader tensions between personal expectations and institutional traditions within religious organisations.
The Catholic Diocese is yet to issue an official response, but sources say efforts are underway to calm tensions and prevent further fallout from the controversy.
