Canada has announced plans to open its Express Entry immigration pathway to foreign-trained doctors beginning in 2026, a move aimed at addressing critical shortages in the country’s healthcare system.

The new policy will allow qualified international medical professionals to apply for permanent residency through a streamlined immigration process, making it easier for provinces and territories to attract and retain doctors.

Canadian authorities said the initiative is part of broader immigration and healthcare reforms designed to reduce long waiting times, improve access to medical services, and strengthen the national workforce. Foreign doctors who meet eligibility criteria, including education, professional experience and language requirements, are expected to benefit from faster processing under the scheme.

Officials noted that the policy would complement ongoing efforts to recognise foreign credentials and support internationally trained professionals in meeting Canadian licensing standards.

Health sector stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a significant step toward closing manpower gaps in hospitals and rural communities.

Further details on eligibility requirements and application procedures are expected to be released closer to the 2026 launch date.
