The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for improved security across the country, noting that Nigerians experienced one of the most peaceful Christmas celebrations in many years.

President of CAN, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, stated this during a visit by leaders of the association to the residence of President Tinubu and the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to felicitate with the First Family over the Christmas season.

Okoh said the visit was not only to share goodwill but also to express appreciation for the administration’s efforts in catering for the poor, strengthening national unity and advancing peace and development in the country.

“This visit is to felicitate with Mr President and his wife, the mother of the nation, during this Christmas period and to appreciate them for what they are doing, especially their commitment to caring for the poor and moving our country forward,” he said.

The CAN president described the calm recorded during the festive season as a significant milestone, particularly for Christian communities that had, in previous years, experienced repeated attacks during major celebrations.

“This Christmas is the first in many years that we were not woken up at midnight by calls reporting that a church had been attacked. This is a testimony that we must share, and we hope and pray that this will continue,” Okoh said.

He added that the development has renewed hope among Christians and Nigerians generally that peace can be sustained through deliberate leadership and effective security measures.

The CAN delegation also pledged continued support and cooperation with the Tinubu administration, stressing the association’s readiness to partner with government in promoting national development, unity and peaceful coexistence.

“We are here to pledge our commitment to continue working with Mr President for the development and progress of our country, Nigeria,” Okoh said.

Responding to a question on recent tensions triggered by comments attributed to the President of the United States and how Nigeria handled the situation, Okoh said the Tinubu administration showed responsiveness and maturity in its approach.

According to him, the government has demonstrated renewed commitment to strengthening the nation’s security architecture and ensuring the safety of citizens across the country.

“We are seeing renewed efforts and commitment to ensure that Nigerians go out in peace and return home in peace,” he noted.

While acknowledging that security challenges remain, the CAN president expressed confidence in the direction of the administration, describing the president’s early steps as encouraging.

“There is still a lot to be done, but we believe the President has started well. We hope and pray that these efforts will be sustained and that by next year, Nigerians will begin to see more visible results of what is being done now,” Okoh said.

The visit underscored growing engagement between the Federal Government and faith-based organisations in efforts to promote peace, stability and national cohesion.
