Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, on Thursday after collapsing in his office, sparking widespread concern across the state capital.
The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m., prompting an immediate emergency response from his aides and security personnel, who swiftly transported him to the hospital. According to witnesses, the deputy governor appeared to be in critical condition upon arrival at the FMC emergency unit, where medical personnel commenced urgent care.
Hospital sources confirmed that Senator Ewhrudjakpo has since been moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he is reportedly stabilising under close monitoring. While no official statement has been issued by the Bayelsa State Government or the deputy governor’s media team, multiple sources within the hospital told Vanguard that he is receiving optimal medical attention and remains in stable condition.

News of the collapse spread quickly, sending panic through Yenagoa as residents and government officials sought updates on his condition. The situation prompted heightened security, with personnel sealing off parts of the FMC premises to control access and maintain order.
Senior government officials have continued to visit the hospital, offering solidarity and support as they await clearer information on the deputy governor’s health status. Attempts by journalists to reach his media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi, were unsuccessful, deepening public speculation about the seriousness of the incident.
A close associate of the deputy governor attributed the health scare to his demanding workload, describing him as a relentless worker who may need to prioritise rest. “He’s a workaholic; he should find time to rest,” the source told Vanguard, hinting at the toll of continuous high-level engagements.
As Bayelsa residents await an official update, the atmosphere around the state government and political circles remains tense. The incident has intensified conversations about the pressures of public office and the importance of balancing duty with personal well-being.
