The Nigerian Army has rescued 18 passengers following the hijack of a boat travelling toward Cameroon, averting what authorities described as a potentially deadly incident along Nigeria’s coastal waterways.

According to military sources, the boat was intercepted after distress information was received about armed men who had forcefully taken control of the vessel. Troops swiftly launched an operation in coordination with other security agencies.

The hijackers reportedly attempted to divert the boat toward a remote route when security forces closed in. After a brief confrontation, the attackers fled, abandoning the passengers who were later secured by the army.

All 18 victims, including women and children, were rescued unharmed and provided with medical checks. Security officials said preliminary investigations suggest the hijackers may be linked to a criminal gang operating along border waterways.

The rescued passengers were reportedly travelling for business and personal reasons when the incident occurred. Authorities have since intensified patrols in the area to prevent similar attacks.

Army spokespersons said the operation underscores the military’s commitment to securing Nigeria’s maritime and riverine corridors, particularly in border regions prone to criminal activity.

Residents of nearby communities expressed relief at the successful rescue, calling for sustained security presence to protect travellers and fishermen.

The military has urged the public to report suspicious movements and cooperate with security agencies, as efforts continue to clamp down on piracy and cross-border crime in the region.
