Nigeria on Wednesday paused to honour its fallen and serving military personnel as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marked the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance and Celebration Day with a solemn tribute to members of the Nigerian Armed Forces who paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation.
In a message to the nation, the President described the sacrifices of fallen soldiers as the foundation of Nigeria’s freedom, peace, and unity, stressing that while their names may not always be remembered, their courage continues to sustain the country.
“A nation that forgets its fallen heroes loses its direction; Nigeria, however, remembers,” Tinubu said, noting that the bravery of military personnel has remained central to the survival and stability of the country.
The President also paid special tribute to the families of deceased service members, acknowledging the pain borne by widows, children, and loved ones left behind. He said no words could fully compensate for their loss, but assured them that the nation remains grateful for the honour and dedication with which their relatives served.

Addressing serving officers and men, Tinubu commended their discipline, professionalism, and courage, describing their role in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty as a heavy responsibility often carried far from home. He recognised personnel serving across land, sea, and air, as well as those in frontline and support roles.
“As President and Commander-in-Chief, I reaffirm my commitment to the welfare and dignity of our Armed Forces,” he stated, adding that a secure Nigeria must stand firmly behind those who defend it.
The President pledged continued government support for the military, stressing that national security remains a top priority of his administration.
He concluded the message with prayers for the repose of fallen heroes, strength for serving personnel, and blessings for the nation.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed annually to honour members of the Nigerian Armed Forces who died in active service and to recognise the contributions of serving and retired personnel to national security.
