The Traffic NG

Authorities in Ogun State have charged the driver attached to Nigerian-British boxing star Anthony Joshua following a fatal road crash that claimed two lives along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The incident, which occurred late last month, has continued to draw national attention because of Joshua’s involvement and the loss of life.

According to police sources, the driver was arraigned on charges related to dangerous driving and causing death by negligence. Investigators allege that the vehicle, part of Joshua’s convoy, was involved in a collision that resulted in the deaths of two occupants of another car. Joshua himself sustained injuries in the crash and has since received medical care.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that investigations were concluded before charges were filed, stressing that due process was followed regardless of the profile of those involved. Officials said the case was treated as a standard traffic fatality investigation, with witness statements, vehicle inspections, and forensic assessments forming the basis of the charges.

Anthony Joshua, who later issued a statement through his team, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He described the accident as a tragic and painful moment, adding that he would cooperate fully with authorities as the legal process unfolds.

Road safety advocates have used the incident to renew calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, particularly on high-speed corridors such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which has recorded several fatal accidents in recent years. They argue that celebrity involvement should not distract from the broader issue of reckless driving and poor road discipline.

The case has been adjourned to allow for further legal proceedings, with the court expected to determine liability based on the evidence presented. For now, the tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the human cost of road accidents and the need for accountability, regardless of status or fame.
