Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was injured on Monday following a serious road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, an incident that reportedly claimed the lives of two people.
The crash occurred near the Sagamu axis of the busy highway while Joshua was travelling in a convoy vehicle. According to preliminary reports from road safety officials, the vehicle collided with a stationary truck, leading to a violent impact that caused significant damage. Joshua, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained injuries described as non life threatening and was immediately taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said the boxer appeared shaken but conscious as he was assisted out of the wreckage by bystanders and emergency responders. Video clips circulating on social media showed him walking with support shortly after the accident, moments before he was moved for medical attention.
Tragically, two other occupants involved in the crash were confirmed dead at the scene, while additional passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries. Their identities have not yet been officially released, pending notification of next of kin.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said initial findings suggest that excessive speed and unsafe overtaking may have contributed to the accident. They noted that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash and to determine any possible violations of traffic regulations.
The incident has once again drawn attention to safety concerns on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest highways and a frequent site of fatal accidents, especially during peak travel periods. Road safety authorities have renewed calls on motorists to observe speed limits and exercise caution, particularly during the festive season when traffic volume increases significantly.
Joshua, a British-Nigerian boxing icon and former unified heavyweight champion, has strong ties to Nigeria and was reportedly in the country for the holidays. The accident comes shortly after his return to the spotlight following a recent high-profile boxing bout abroad.
As of the time of filing this report, Joshua’s management team had not issued a formal statement, but sources close to the situation indicated that he is responding well to treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.
Meanwhile, tributes have begun to pour in for the victims who lost their lives in the crash, as Nigerians continue to call for stricter enforcement of road safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
